Digital Transformation: Innovation Strategies of Italian Companies

Digital transformation has generated in companies the need to begin a route towards the Intelligent Enterprise, that means to integrate technologies able to exploit data as competitive lever, in order to guarantee new relationships with the market and to improve processes.

IDC, in collaboration with SAP, conducted a survey on about 200 Italian companies to investigate the technical and market priorities that are influencing innovation strategies. Those priorities have been analysed under five different dimensions: Platform Technologies, Customer Experience, Smart Manufacturing, Smart HR and Smart Procurement.

Digital Transformation: Business and Technological priorities for Italian Companies

The context of instability and economic uncertainty positions on top of business priorities the need for a careful financial-economic management and a reduction of costs. This is followed by the need to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty, the will to go into new market segments and the need to develop new products and services.

Regarding technological priorities, the focus is shifted on the need to pursue a larger automation and process optimization, in order to increase the efficiency, to decrease costs, to reduce errors, to execute tasks faster and to assign strategically relevant tasks to staff.

Control and costs reduction occupy a relevant position also in ICT, followed by the ability to translate demands of business lines into projects of innovation and technological evolution and the need to migrate IT systems and services to the cloud.

Digital Transformation goals and decision makers

The Customer Journey goes through different physical and digital channels. Customers’ expectations are also higher than in the past; for this reason the main target is about the transformation of relational channels with customers.

Further priorities are referred to the transformation of the business model – to get into new markets, to improve the positioning and to generate new revenue sources – besides the creation of new “Smart” Products.

Excluding the IT department, the main decision makers in Digital Transformation strategies of Italian companies are Business Management and/or Presidency followed by Finance/Administration Direction and Marketing Direction. During the last 10 years the roles of CFO and CMO gained a more strategic role, with a wider participation in business and operational decisions, representing a concrete support for the CEO.

The transformation process of Italian companies towards the Intelligent Enterprise

The strategic orientation of companies towards a model of Intelligent Enterprise can be summarized in five dimensions.



Platform Technologies: it measures the expansion of IT infrastructures trough Cloud platforms, the extension of company Data warehousing capacity, the renovation of Enterprise Information Management solutions, the reinforcement of Big Data managing capability, the experimentation of High-Performance Analytics solutions, the unification of business databases in a real time accessible repository and the design of simpler, more flexible and integrated business processes.


Customer Experience: it measures the orientation among different communication channels, the integration of sales, marketing and operation processes and the measurement of their efficiency and effectiveness, the market segmentation, the design of customer experience, the analysis of data for new products/services development and for the definition of the business strategy.


Smart Manufacturing: it measures the orientation towards Cyber-physical Systems architectures, the development of business models based on IoT, the promotion of a data driven culture, the replacement of production tools with connected machines, to the use of new KPIs aimed to control the production, to invest on solutions for a flexible and automated production, to access to national founding for Industry 4.0.


Smart HR: it measures the orientation towards the renewal of recruiting tools, the mapping of skills for Knowledge Transfer/Talent Management, the automation of operational documentation filling processes, the improvement of operational processes in terms of transparency, resolution of conflicts, planning of careers, efficiency and effectiveness of human resources, introduction of Smart Working models.


Smart Procurement: it measures the orientation towards the automation of the end-to-end logistics, the suppliers rating with more speed and accuracy, the improvement of visibility of information along the supply chain, the real time monitoring of KPIs, the mitigation of risks of distribution inconsistency, the reduction of variability, the alignment of contractual goals with partners, the reinforcement of agility and resiliency of the company in case of adverse economic conditions.
